A background check can cost $20 or $250 for the same candidate. The difference is what you are actually buying: a quick database search, or verified records, past employers, education and a drug test. Buy too little and you miss what matters. Buy too much and you pay for checks the role doesn't need.
The short answer: as industry estimates, a standard employment background check costs about $30 to $150 per candidate. Basic database packages start around $20 to $50, standard packages with county and federal criminal searches run about $50 to $100, and executive or regulated-role packages can reach $150 to $250 or more. Drug tests are usually billed separately. In the UK, a basic or standard DBS check costs £20 and an enhanced check £41 from 5 October 2026.
Price List by Check Type
Check | What it covers | Estimated cost per candidate |
|---|---|---|
National criminal database | Fast multi-source search; useful as a first pass | Under $20 |
County and federal criminal searches | Court-verified records where the person lived and worked | Included in $50–$100 packages; extra counties add cost |
Employment verification | Dates and titles confirmed with past employers | $10–$25 per employer |
Education verification | Degrees and dates confirmed with schools | $10–$25 |
Motor vehicle record | Driving history for driving roles | Adds $10–$20 |
Drug test (5-panel urine) | Standard pre-employment panel | $30–$60 |
Drug test (hair) | Longer detection window | $80–$120 |
All prices are industry estimates for US screening and vary by provider and location.
Build the Right Package for the Role
Match the check to the risk of the job, and use the same package for everyone in that role.
Role type | Suggested checks | Estimated total |
|---|---|---|
Office, admin, customer service | Criminal searches + last employer verification | $50–$125 |
Drivers, logistics, field staff | Criminal searches + driving record + drug test | $90–$180 |
Finance, payroll, cash handling | Criminal searches + employment and education verification | $70–$150 |
Senior or executive hires | Full package with all past employers and education | $150–$250+ |
The Hidden Costs to Ask About
County court fees: some courts charge access fees on top of the search price.
Extra counties: a candidate who moved often means more searches.
Monthly minimums: some providers charge even in months you don't hire.
International checks: candidates who lived abroad cost more and take longer.
Re-runs: checks that expire before the start date may need repeating.
The Rules That Come With the Price (USA)
When you use a background check company, the Fair Credit Reporting Act sets steps you must follow. The Federal Trade Commission's guidance for employers sets them out:
When | What you must do |
|---|---|
Before the check | Tell the candidate in writing, in a standalone document, that you may use a report for the decision, and get their written permission. |
Before rejecting based on the report | Give the person a copy of the report and "A Summary of Your Rights Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act". |
After rejecting | Tell them the decision was based on the report, give the report company's contact details, and explain their right to dispute it and get a free copy within 60 days. |
The same guidance says to treat everyone equally: apply the same checks and standards to everyone in a role, whatever their race, sex, religion, age, disability or other protected trait. Some states and cities add their own rules on when and how criminal history can be asked about.
The UK Option: DBS Checks

Standard | £20.00 | £21.50 |
Enhanced | £41.00 | £49.50 |
Update Service (per year) | £15.00 | £16.00 |
Standard and enhanced checks are only for roles that are eligible for them, such as work with children or vulnerable adults.
5 Ways to Spend Less Without Cutting Corners
Check finalists only: screen CVs, skills and interviews first, then run checks on the one or two people you plan to hire.
Use role-based packages: don't buy the executive package for every hire.
Ask for volume pricing: hiring many people at once usually lowers the per-check price.
Avoid monthly minimums if you hire only a few times a year.
Start checks early so delays don't push back start dates.
